Nestlé supports informed choice

- - -

We communicate with consumers about informed choice with the following message:

“The miracle baby food.  Made by you.

Nestlé understands babies.  That’s why we encourage you to start breast-feeding and keep breast-feeding – for as long as possible.  Because breast milk give infants the best start in life.

If you do choose to supplement, healthcare experts recommend iron-fortified formula as the next best alternative to breast milk.

Ultimately, how you decide to nourish your baby is very personal.  We encourage you to make this important decision based on the right information, advice and support from family, friends, and your healthcare professional.  Because until now, nothing has ever been this important.”

We comply with all codes

Like Canada, most industrialized countries have specific codes or legislation about infant nutrition and care. Nestlé respects all of these. We also voluntarily comply with the World Health Organization's ‘Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes’ in developing countries and wherever the Code is law.

In Canada, where the WHO Code is not legislated, Nestlé supports the position of the Canadian Paediatric Society, the Dietitians of Canada and Health Canada.  This position is outlined in the document entitled Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants, which states breast-feeding for as long as possible is best, and that formula is appropriate if mothers choose to supplement or discontinue breast-feeding. Nestlé also supports the Revised Recommendations for Breastfed infants issued by Health Canada in 2004 that state “ Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of life for healthy term infants.”  In addition, Nestlé complies with the Food and Drug Act and the Competition Act, which regulate the infant formula industry here in Canada.

We support the choice of our staff

At Nestlé, every new parent is offered a free breast pump, a parent education kit and of course the opportunity to subscribe to the Nestlé Baby Program. Our Head Office currently offers an expression room for breast-feeding mothers returning to the workplace.  If mothers choose not to breast-feed, our formula brands such as Good Start are available for sale at our company stores.
